If you wish to say goodbye to your eating problem and develop a healthy relationship with food, Parting Is Such Sweet Sorrow: Saying Goodbye to an Eating Problem by Louise Parente, Ph.D., presents six well-explained steps and professional advice to help you do just that.
Parente, an eating disorder specialist, uses her personal and professional experience to provide readers with insights into the topic and tools to understand where they are in their journey. Readers with eating disorders may be familiar with the pain of trying and failing to maintain progress in their battles. Hence, the author emphasizes the need to focus on the feelings of loss that would arise from changing how one eats. She adds that it is necessary to grieve that loss. The six steps the author provides would help readers understand the root of an eating disorder and say goodbye to it.
The author’s goal to help people is evident throughout this book. It shows in her conversational and empathetic tone, well-organized points, and the extra reading materials she recommends to ensure that readers can overcome eating disorders. My favorite aspect of the book is that she uses the stories of some people she worked with to make her points easy to understand. Through the stories, I appreciated the six steps she presented better and could see how they would help the reader. They also foster hope and are inspiring because they show that it’s possible to overcome any disorder.
Furthermore, I love the ‘Points to Remember’ section at the end of each chapter. It not only summarized the contents of a particular chapter but highlighted the salient points therein. Also, I enjoyed the general summary in the last part of the book, which refreshes the reader’s memory and provides a concise overview of the publication.
The author’s organization of her points in the book is praiseworthy, and I like how simple her discussions are. I also loved how she introduced new topics and explained new terms. For example, I enjoyed her simple explanation of the integrative approach in psychotherapy called Internal Family Systems (IFS). Having read a book about ‘Inner Voices,’ I loved how her discussion about IFS provided me with a simple but clear explanation of the term.
I recently read another publication on this topic. While that book was also insightful, I appreciated how this title presented a different key to unlock healing. There’s nothing I disliked about this book, and I am happy to report that I found only a few typos in it. Therefore, I am glad to rate the publication four out of four stars. The book is insightful and inspiring, and I like that the author’s message and discussions are clear and engaging. I highly recommend the book to readers who want to say goodbye to eating disorders like binge eating, anorexia, bulimia, etc. Also, readers interested in the topic would find the book very informative.
